Skydiving often sparks strong reactions—excitement, fear, or a mix of both. But along with those emotions come plenty of myths. From dramatic movie scenes to secondhand stories, misconceptions about the sport can prevent people from ever taking that first leap.
At Skydive Elsinore, we’ve been helping people fly since 1958. With over 65 years of continuous operation, we’ve heard nearly every myth in the book. That’s why we’re here to break down the biggest skydiving myths—and provide clear, fact-based answers to help you move from curiosity to confidence.
Whether you’re on the fence about jumping or already counting down the days until your first freefall, understanding the truth about skydiving can make your experience more informed, comfortable, and exciting.
Myth #1: “Skydiving Is Extremely Dangerous”
Reality: Skydiving is much safer than most people believe—especially tandem skydives.
According to data from the United States Parachute Association (USPA), tandem skydiving has one of the lowest injury rates in recreational sports. Thanks to strict safety protocols, modern parachute systems, and thorough training, the odds are in your favor.
Is skydiving safe for beginners?
Yes. When you jump tandem, you’re connected to a highly trained, FAA-certified tandem instructor. At Skydive Elsinore, safety is our top priority. Our instructors complete rigorous training and ongoing evaluations to maintain the highest safety standards in the industry.
Myth #2: “You Can’t Breathe During Freefall”
Reality: Breathing in freefall is completely normal.
A common fear is that the wind during freefall will make it hard to breathe. While you’ll experience high-speed airflow, it won’t block your ability to inhale or exhale. Many people are simply holding their breath due to excitement.
Tip:
Relax, smile, and breathe naturally—through your nose or mouth. Your instructor will remind you of this before the jump.
Myth #3: “The Parachute Might Not Open”
Reality: Parachute systems today are built with multiple safety layers.
At Skydive Elsinore, every tandem parachute rig is equipped with:
- Main parachute
- Reserve parachute
- Automatic Activation Device (AAD)
The AAD is a computerized system that deploys the reserve parachute automatically if needed.
Additionally, every rig undergoes regular maintenance and safety checks by certified riggers. Instructors inspect equipment thoroughly before each jump.
Myth #4: “I’ll Feel Like I’m Falling”
Reality: You’ll feel more like floating or flying than falling.
Despite the name, skydiving doesn’t feel like the stomach-drop sensation of a rollercoaster. That’s because you quickly reach terminal velocity, where air resistance balances your speed.
Description:
You feel supported by the air beneath you—almost like lying on a cushion of wind.
Myth #5: “Skydiving Is Only for Adrenaline Junkies”
Reality: People of all backgrounds choose to skydive, many for deeply personal reasons.
Some jump to conquer fears. Others do it to celebrate milestones or explore something new. Whether you’re adventurous or cautious, skydiving is for anyone with a sense of curiosity.
Tandem skydiving offers a structured, beginner-friendly way to try it safely—with expert guidance every step of the way.
Myth #6: “You Need to Be Super Fit to Skydive”
Reality: You don’t need to be an athlete to skydive.
If you’re in generally good health and meet weight requirements, you’re likely eligible. At Skydive Elsinore, we welcome jumpers of many fitness levels. Our team provides instruction and equipment tailored to your needs.
Tandem Jump Guidelines:
- Weight limit: Approximately 225 lbs. (varies slightly depending on height and body type)
- Age requirement: 18 or older
If you’re unsure, contact our team for a personalized evaluation.
Myth #7: “You Have No Control During a Tandem Jump”
Reality: Tandem skydivers are active participants in the experience.
Before you jump, you’ll receive a short training session on body position, arching, and how to assist during parachute flight. Many tandem students even steer the parachute with their instructor’s guidance.
At Skydive Elsinore, we encourage engagement, not just observation.
Bonus: Other Common Myths (Quickfire Section)
- “The plane ride is worse than the jump.”
Most jumpers say the plane ride is calm and scenic. Anxiety tends to fade once the door opens. - “The parachute opening jerks you painfully.”
Modern parachutes are designed to open gradually and smoothly. - “It’s just a one-time bucket list stunt.”
Many people fall in love with skydiving and go on to earn their solo license. - “Skydiving is only for the young.”
We’ve welcomed first-time jumpers well into their 70s and beyond.
