Run 2003
The
5th Annual Poker Run proved to be bigger than ever with 11
teams competing in 5 fierce rounds of 6 way. The event has
grown every year, not just in size, but in the creative twists
that surround the end of the meet – the famed poker
game. The meet includes 5 rounds that vary in difficulty,
with a handicap system to give newer competitors a shot at
the title. At the end of each round, the team randomly draws
a card, so at the end of the day you have a 5 card poker hand.
This year the competition came down to the
wire between Pok-R-Face and Tequila Haze, both captained by
locals Mike Inabinet and Steve Miller; Tequila Haze held on
for the win and prepared for the “big game.” With
a $300 pot at stake (proceeds from registration fees), the
poker game is quickly becoming the most anticipated part of
the event. As a player designated from each of the 11 teams
surrounds the poker table to battle it out, a huge crowd boasts
about who has the best hand.
Then come the penalty shots. For DZO John Hamilton,
there is no sweeter moment than doling out tequila shots for
any reason – whether logical or esoteric. The winning
team is guaranteed to get one of these. The game is 5 card
draw (6’s wild of course), with a twist…. to get
a card, you have to take a shot. This game also came down
to the wire, ironically, between Tequila Haze and Pok-R-Face.
This time, Pok-R-Face had its turn, winning the pot with a
full house, king high. Don’t miss this one next year….
which is guaranteed to have a bizarre new twist.
