Skydiving Chicks Rock 2006
By Shannon Hernandez

It isn’t news that women who skydive are exceptional creatures, and most of the sisterhood is hip to this fact. So, to celebrate their common bonds, many of them travel from far and near every fall to the Skydiving Chicks Rock Boogie, at Skydive Elsinore in Southern California. Wicked fun skydives and even wilder festivities with some exceptional ladies are the custom and with a 50-50 ratio of ladies to men, the guys are equally stoked to have so many skydiving babes in one place.  This annual celebration boasts a bigger turnout each year as most participants agree, “Chicks Rock Boogie is the best boogie EVER!” Of course this is subjective, so here’s a look at what went down at the 6 th annual event, September 29-October 1, to cause such a groundswell.

Easter Scrambles 2006

With 4 teams of 4-way, each group hit the hill running... well actually, skydiving, I guess. ;) The day was spent getting fun clues, making sweet jumps, and general trash-talking with an Easter flare. After each round, half the fun was trying to change the competing teams’ names on the white board to something clever and cutting at the same time. Hilarious, I tell you! With each clue thought up by our beautiful office ladies, the hunt was on from clue number one. Each clue led to the next clue, and the next clue, and so on. So when the final round was completed, the hunt was ON! A lot of people thought it was in the peas....... and it WAS, but the peas in the STUDENT landing area! Mike “Tickle” Teague was first to the scene and he even had a shovel— talk about planning ahead! In no time he unearthed beers on ice and the rest of the treasure! Where will it be next year? You’ll have to show up to find out!

Despite low clouds almost the entire weekend, we still had a great turnout for this Freefly Skills Camp. With little jumping, camp leaders Chris Fiala, Andy Malchoidi, Andrew Staich, and visiting Guano Freefly took advantage of the down time to talk theory with camp participants and answer as many questions as possible. To keep spirits up, we rallied the troops and a massive kick-ball game was ON in the main landing area. It was a fight to the finish, with Andy nailing Curt at home plate to foil his home run. With that momentum, Andy’s team went on to win by 4 runs. Rock on with your bad selves. Sunday brought more clouds, but also some holes and everyone got in a couple of jumps.

Wigs on Fire

The Wigs on Fire series of events was a philanthropic effort devised and organized by our own Rosa Alva to raise money, awareness, and hair for the Locks of Love Foundation. Despite the downpours, Wigs 1 had a great turnout and quite a few ladies stepped up to the scissors to chop off their locks for a good cause. We all gathered around the fire and felt good about just being there for support. The rain also didn’t keep us from donning our wigs and hitting the Sports Stop, a local watering hole for a great party.

Gravity Games 3

The video doesn’t lie... ridiculousness of this nature can only be found at the GRAVITY GAMES!!! Gravity Games 3 to be exact. This go round, we added some 3-way hybrid action to the standard line-up of extreme tracking, camera geeking, and canopy running. Speaking of geeking, this Games there were quite a few bold entries... Javi and his full plush Scooby Doo, our very own naked skysurfer, and can anyone forget Tammi’s banana? Wait, Tammi was at Gravity Games 2.... proving my point that, none of these are images we will soon forget.

Gravity Games 2

Hoops, flips, geeks, hops, flops, tracks, and a lot of lousy fake AFF instructors— this Gravity Games had it all. The competition was fierce, but in the end Ryan Simpson pulled away from the pack easily securing the gold medal around his neck when the day was done.

The first-ever Gravity Games — were you there? Did you launch a horny gorilla? Exit the airplane eating your lunch? Or head-bang to German karaoke at 1am? Easter Scrambles 2005! Five teams, four rounds, a bunch of peeps (regular and marshmallow), and a treasure to remember… After getting rosters set, the jumping was underway, with teams “Mike’s a Virgin,” and “Hard… Boiled” positing impressive scores in round one. The “Easter Bunnies of Unspeakable Doom!” also came out strong, and held their lead through the entire meet, despite the grip-switching antics of Coach Simar.

Third Annual Wine Country Invitational!

For the third year in a row, Skydive Elsinore’s Wine Country Invitational has grown in size and spirit. With nearly 60 participants for 2004, there was much fun to be had in the air and on the ground. Jack Burke, Doug Forth (Scotty Latinis), and John Hamilton organized challenging dives drawing on all the talent in every group. Strong prep, good vibes, and ok, discipline too, resulted in a lot of successful jumps, and high-quality digital stills taken throughout the weekend by Bryan Harrell, Chris Fiala, and Joel Kiesel. After many debriefs, “Stay in the knife fight, and think light thoughts,” won as the fan-favorite saying of the weekend—thanks, Jack!

First Team Social 2004First Team Social 2004

The first-annual First-Team Social got off to a raring start November 20th.  A day of optional jumping brought out a throng of young 4-way enthusiasts—registrants and non-registrants alike.  Coaches got groups in the air, giving everyone a taste of what the next day would bring.  After a busy day of jumping, everyone gathered for the team-building seminar, led by Lou Ascione, Melanie Curtis, Erin Murphy, and DZO, John Hamilton.  Among the topics discussed were how to build a team, what to look for in teammates, the value of coaching, the financial aspects of 4-way training, and so on—basically, everything you need to know to get a 4-way team started, and the contact info for everyone in the room looking to do the same thing.
